South Korean Tour A Boost for WA Development

Last week’s Gangjin Tournament in South Korea has been hailed as a great success by the Football West National Training Centre (NTC) assistant coach who helped guide the Western Australian team to fifth place.

The prestigious invitation-only Under 15 tournament saw Football West take on French team Valenciennes FC, South Korea’s Cheong-Nyong and eventual champions, European giants Barcelona.

The NTC started the competition in superb style, defeating Valenciennes 4-2 in their opening match before losing heavily to Cheong-Nyong (6-1) and Barcelona (7-0) in the other group matches.

After qualifying through to the finals, Football West upset Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 and in the play-off for fifth place, the WA side defeated Japan’s Cerezo Osaka 3-2.

Assistant coach Warren Grieve says the tournament was a fantastic experience for the young side.

“It was great chance to see where Football West is at in terms of development, and gave us an insight as to how other teams and countries organise, train and compete.

“The tournament is an annual event and it would be fantastic to return next year knowing exactly what to expect.

“The standard was outstanding and competing in high level events will only help with the development in Western Australia.”

Football West is confident of being invited back for next year’s tournament.

Stirling Junior Daniel DeSilva Picked in National Team

The Qantas Australian Under 13 Boys squad has been announced for the upcoming AFC Under 14 Boys Festival of Football, with three West Australians in the 22-player team.

Daniel DeSilva from Stirling Lions, ECU Joondalup’s Ross Millard and Perth City’s Jordan Pokler were the WA selections for the tournament which kicks off on May 24 in Sabah, Malaysia.

The team was selected by coach Ante Juric who identified the players at the 2010 FFA National Junior Championships for Boys and made his final selection at a training camp which was recently held in Canberra.

Pokler was named the prestigious Player of the Tournament at the National Junior Championships and was named in the original extended national squad with WA teammates DeSilva, Millard, Benjamin Johns and Luke Vittiglia.

However, Johns and Vittiglia did not make the final 22 despite outstanding performances at the Championships.

Juric says he is pleased with the squad, but admits it will be tough for Australia in taking an underage team.

“The recent selection camp was very successful and allowed us to gauge the performance of the players within the system that we will use at the tournament,” said Juric.

“I’m very happy with the final group of players that we have selected with all possessing a high level of technical ability.

“Having been to the tournament last year, it will be much tougher this time due to us taking a younger team, but this is something that will be prepared for and above all it will be a great learning experience for the boys.”

Football West Game Development Manager Andrew Bettell says WA could have had even more players selected in the national team.

“We are very pleased to see the three lads take their place in the squad and equally disappointed for Ben and Luke who missed out,” he said.

“Nevertheless the reports from the camp on all five were very pleasing and the future looks bright for all of them.

“This recognition continues the good representation in national squads for the West and again reflects well on the Football West High Performance Centre and State programs.”

The Qantas Australian Under 13 Boys National Team will depart Australia on May 29 before playing their opening match on the June 2.

The AFC Under 14 Boys Festival of Football will run until June 6.
