Angels Night Series Results

The night series started brightly for the Angels when they kicked off their first game against UWA in the premier division. Supporters looked forward to a good game on this cool evening.
Angels took the lead early in the first half through a well poached goal from Annick Phan. As the Angels settled down, they played good strong attractive football and took hold of the game in midfield.
The second goal was scored shortly before half time from a thunderous drive by Claire Wragg who has the confidence to shoot from long range. UWA tried to make a game of it by using the long ball to their speedy striker who got the first goal with a neat chip over keeper Kristy Tershinsky.
After the break the Angels, who were making wise substitutions took control and went after the third goal which came from the boot of Collen Van Dongen. .
Uwa never looked like threathening the Angels as they hardly got into the attacking zone and they looked a different team to the one that played so well in the 2008 season. However they did get a second goal which was well deserved as they stayed focussed and produced their best on the night.
At the closing minutes of the game, the Angels kept pressing forward and got a deserved fourth goal which was again scored by Colleen van Dongen which will boost her confidence.
Coach Leo Coppens was very happy at the outcome and will no doubt get the team back on track for next weeks game against Northern Redbacks on Fri 27th at 20.30.
Result Sunday 22nd Feb Coker Park : Beckenham Angels 4 v 2 UWA
Thanks to all supporters who turned up and shouted out loud. Special thanks to the baby brigade. Please remember that at all football venues there is the Healthways smarter than smoking no smoking policy.

Girls Can Play

In Late 2000 a handfull of female soccer players and their coach, Zane Abrahams decided to go it alone and start a soccer club. So in 2001 they started training, joined the Womens Soccer WA and started at the division three level – that was the entry division for new clubs at the time. The team were amazing that year and only lost one game in eighteen. They scored a record amount f goals and conceded only twelve.
The ages were from as young as 11 to the eldest at 40. Most of the girls were inexperienced but gave their best at all games and at training. They were determined that division three championship was going to be theirs and at the end of that season they got their wish. A comment made by some opposition teams was that they were good enough to play at a higher level.
The club has grown since then and had six teams in 2008. In 2006 the Angels entered the newly formed Footbal West womens premier league for the first time and are still working hard to get to the top.
Also, in 2005 the first U16 team was introduced and in 2007 the first U15 team. As the club continued its development, a third junior team was founded by Zane at U13 level and won the Top 4 Cup and its first year. The coach of that team was Scott Moore who started his coaching career for the first season with a trophy and he is keen to continue the good work.
In 2009 the U17 team, who won the 2008 U17 Division 1 league and top 4 cup will move up a division into U17 Premier where they will meet stronger more organised teams.
In the past years the Angels are proud to have had players committed to an all female club with the likes of Lizzie Scott who represented Australia at Schoolgirls level and toured England. In its first year Hannah Newton was selected for U14 State and went on to play state for a few years. Recently, Kristy Terschinsky was selected to play at NTC and could be a future Glory Womens player.
A few juniors are being groomed to try out at state level for next years teams and we feel confident that they will get selected.
For the first time the club will have its own changroom facilities and two ovals to accomadate its growth for future years.
Currently our womens premier team is hard at work preparing for the 2009 night series and will as give their best as they always do. Coach Leo Coppens is looking to reach new goals and is quietly confident of achieving a stronger finish at the end of 2009 season.
