Glory Youth Beef Up for Victory Clash

Perth Glory Youth will be close to full strength for their home clash against Melbourne as the club’s horror run of injuries finally looks to be behind them.
The West Aussies have struggled to field a side this season and relied on replacement players for the most part. At one stage 11 of their 16 contracted players were unavailable.
Despite those setbacks Perth have shown plenty of character to be equal on points with third placed Adelaide but occupy fourth because of goal difference.
Utility players Ryan Pearson and Adam Taggart return to the squad this week and follow five of their team mates who returned in a thrilling 4-3 win against the AIS last weekend.
Defender Dean Evans, who was one of the players to suit up last weekend after a long lay-off, says it has been a big confidence boost to have the majority of the squad back up and running.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries but we’re slowly getting everyone back in the side,” Evans said.
“We had quite a few guys come back last week and they did really well and it just adds more strength to the side when the coach has a fit squad to pick from.
“That said, the boys that come in and covered did really well and stepped up to the plate when we needed to get the job done. It’s good to know that they’re all capable of filling in when we need them.”
Pegging back the AIS after falling behind on numerous occasions last weekend showed a resolve that will benefit the young Glory side for the remainder of the season according to Evans.
“Coming back from two nil down last week showed good character among the boys. We stuck to our tactics and never gave up. We just played our game and worked really hard to get back in there and got the result in the end which was great.”
Perth have had mixed fortunes at home this season with a win, loss and draw in three matches at ME Bank Stadium. Victory against Melbourne on Sunday will give Glory some breathing space with only three points separating 2nd and 6th.
“We think we can win every game with the squad we’ve got. We’ve got to start making our home ground a fortress and make it tough for every team that comes over here,” said Evans.
After making an impressive debut in Perth’s inaugural National Youth League season Evans was looking forward to backing that up this season but has endured a frustrating injury battle and missed the opening six rounds with a knee complaint.
He made an impressive comeback against the AIS and can’t wait to get back onto the pitch this weekend as he and the rest of the squad test themselves against a quality Melbourne side.
“There are a well organised side and we know what they’re capable of from what they achieved last year. We’re definitely expecting a tough game but we’ll be ready for Melbourne.
“It’s great to be back. I always like playing in front of our home crowd and I know the boys are pumped up to get another win on the board,” said Evans.

Andy Todd Returns to Deny Melbourne Victory
October 30, 2009 by kirkoconnor

Perth Glory’s ability to quell a potent Melbourne Victory attack and extend their unbeaten run at home this season has been significantly boosted by the return of tough defender Andy Todd.
The former English Premier League player has been outstanding for Perth this year and will take his place in the heart of Glory’s defence after missing the past two matches through suspension.
Coach Dave Mitchell will also have the luxury of deploying Socceroos star Mile Sterjovski at the other end of the ground as Perth looks to counter Melbourne’s goal scoring exploits.
“Having both of those lads (Sterjovski & Todd) coming back in is important for us, they have been excellent in the games they’ve played this season,” Mitchell said.
“Andy has been a rock at the back and Mile can play in a variety of positions, his versatility allows us to structure up a bit differently if we choose.
“They also bring plenty of experience and class and have a positive impact on the players around them. They’ll be welcome inclusions,” said Mitchell.
Perth took three points at home against Melbourne earlier this season when Branko Jelic slotted a double and will be looking repeat that dose and arrest a two game slide come Sunday.
The Glory has won their past four outings against the Victorians at ME Bank Stadium are again determined to make the trip west an uncomfortable experience.
“We’ve done ok in the past couple of weeks away from home but don’t have anything to show for it so this game is very important for us to get points back on the board,” said Mitchell.
“We were able to get the result when we played Melbourne earlier in the season but they are a very good side and can cause all sorts of problems if we’re not on our toes.
“They’re in-form and I believe they’re the best team we have played so far this season.
“Perth is a difficult place to come and we want to make sure that’s the case again this weekend. We’re strong at home and will be ready to produce our best.”

Western Knights v Perth SC
The top five finals series comes to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon when League Champions Western Knights takes on runners-up Perth SC in the Flexible Signage Solutions Grand Final at the Clipsal Stadium (3pm)
The two sides met in the major semi-final two weeks ago and Graham Normanton’s side came out on top 3-2 and the Coach hopes to continue with their form on Saturday. “Yes we have beaten them three times this year but that all counts for nothing especially when it comes to a Grand Final. We are confident that we can do well but we are not over confident!! We fully respect Western Knights and their achievements this year so there is no way we can go into this game over confident or complacent in anyway shape or form,” said Normanton.
“The There will be two distinctly different styles of football being played so I guess it will be interesting to see which of us can impose ourselves over the other. There’s one thing for sure and that is that both sides are capable of scoring freely so I’m sure that it will be a very entertaining game with lots of chances. They have some very good players that we will have to take care of but we can’t concentrate on just those players as every player can hurt you if you don’t show them the respect that they deserve.

Western Knights 2009 Minor Premiers
In team news Phil Arnold misses the game through suspension a decision that left Normanton very frustrated. “I’m not happy with the way he got suspended. He got booked for a totally unnecessary deliberate handball against Floreat which has ultimately cost him a chance to play in the biggest game on the WA State League calendar. I’m absolutely fuming with his lack of discipline on this occasion. He has been a very good player for us this season and not only has he missed out on a final but so have PSC just because of his lack of self discipline, I hope he’s learnt a lesson. Other than that there are the usual weekly niggling injuries that most players carry at this time of the year but there’s nothing at this stage that is going to keep anybody out of the game,” added Normanton.
Knights Coach Paul Price was glad to get back in the winners circle last week with the win against Floreat Athena, after ending the season with three winless games. “It was nice to win a game after losing two and drawing one since we won the league in September, so we’re looking forward to the game on Saturday and go into it full of confidence,” said Price.
“Perth has beaten us three times this season, but that’s in the past. We hope Inglewood’s ground is in good condition and it will be a show piece for West Australian football. You have to take your chances in all games you play, especially finals, or you are put under pressure. Fortunately we did that against Floreat, David Micevski beat three or four players out wide and whipped in a cross and Anthony Campbell finished well and David scored a great goal from 20-yards. Saturday will be no different, the side that converts their chances will win the game,” said Price.
“We’re treating the game like any other as a number of our players have set routines, especially Stuart Ferguson who has to be last out of the dressing room, so we will not change a thing for Saturday. It’s a cup final so I shouldn’t have any problems getting the players ready for the game. We’ve worked on a few things this week in training, we conceded two goals from free kicks against Perth in the Preliminary final, one was an unstoppable shot but the other was just poor defending so we have to watch that on Saturday,” explained Price.
In team news Okwy Diamondstar was dropped for Saturday’s win against Floreat and it looks like he will start the game on the bench again on Saturday, although Price has a full squad to choose from.
There are some great match up’s between the sides and the winner of these will go along way to deciding the outcome. The loss of Arnold will give a chance to Andreas Oliveira up front, and he will come up against David Annall, while Greg Sharland will pit his wits against former Perth player Cormac Dawson down the flanks. In midfielder Gary Greenhill and Dom de Felice will do battle with Ivan Zuvela and David Micevski, while Michael Icanovski and Trent Kay will have his hands full with Knights strikers Anthony Campbell and Dwayne Hepburn.
Prediction

Perth SC 2009 Night Series Champions
The Knights overturned a poor run of form with their win over a very flat Floreat in last week’s preliminary final whilst Perth had the weekend off to rest those niggling injury concerns.
The form coming into the game is as follows;-
Perth (last game first): away win (v Knights 3-2), home win ( v Floreat 2-1), home win (v Knights 2-0), away loss (v Cockburn 0-1), home loss (v Sorrento 0-1)
Western Knights (last game first): home win (v Floreat 2-1), home loss (v Perth 2-3), away loss (v Perth 0-2), home draw (v Sorrento 1-1), away loss (Mandurah 1-2).
The most notable thing about the form guide is that Perth have beaten the Western Knight twice in the last three games they have played. This certainly gives Perth a psychological edge, however, gives Paul Price extra motivational leverage for his team.
No doubt David Micevski for the Western Knights is a match winner. he was the one standout performer in what was a dreary, disjointed Preliminary Final at Nash Field last week against Floreat.
Micevski’s skill and invention can turn a game on its head and that is precisely what happened last week.
The Knights have built a strong team around Micevski with other notables including Daniel Micevski, keeper Frazer Siddall, Anthony Campbell up front, Barry Devlin in midfield and Stuart Ferguson and David Annall in the heart of the defence.
The Knights defence did a good job last week and barring injury or other misfortunes we cannot see Price tinkering with it for the final.
Anthony Campbell was quiet upfront as was Daniel Trim, however, Campbell did what he was paid to do and put the ball in the net with a trademark striker’s instinct just after the half time break.
Perth SC, on the other hand, must go into the game as favorites after having bested the Knights in their last three ( two of them very recent meetings).
The loss of Phil Arnold is a hug blow to them. Last time we watched Perth (against Floreat in the major semi final) Arnold was the ‘go to man’ for Perth. Balls were knocked into the channels for Arnold to chase and he did so tirelessly on the day.
David Onoforo was strangely quiet as Arnold led the line giving Floreat’s defence much to concentrate on with his movement and pace causing all sorts of problems. He will be sorely missed by Normo’s side.
Perth have goal threats all all over the park and perhaps this is what sets them out from their competition. The winner in that game against Floreat was scored by right back Matt Danskin with an absolute thunderbolt from well outside the penalty area and, if things are very close, which they are very likely to be, it may be this that gets Perth over the line.
With Arnold in the lineup we would have selected Perth SC in a very close encounter. As it is, without him, we are going to plump for the Knights to win it 3v2 with an extra time thriller by Gold Medal favorite David Micevski.
Pellegrino Looks for Glory Rebound
Perth Glory midfielder Adriano Pellegrino says they will be out to take on Melbourne Victory playing its own game when the two sides meet at ME Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In the last three games between the teams, the Glory has come out on top with three consecutive wins. But after a quiet start to its premiership defence, the Victory have hit their straps in this campaign winning five of the last six games to be second on the Hyundai A-League table and travel to Perth full of confidence.
The Glory in the meantime have lost their last two games on the road to Gold Coast United and North Queensland, but Pellegrino believes the club can respond emphatically at home this weekend, and use its own style to overwhelm the Victorians.
“Melbourne’s travelling very, very well,” said Pellegrino.
“They’ve picked up some form after not starting very well and they’re always a dangerous side, they’ve got great attacking qualities.”
“They do play a little bit narrower, they try to exploit the midfield and get some more bodies in there while (Carlos) Hernandez and Archie (Thompson), float around and get that goal.”
“But at the same time, we’ve got to worry about our game plan, whatever it might be for this week. We’ll work on that and we’ll work on consistency.”
“We know we’ve done well against Melbourne (recently) so now we’ve got to pick up the points at home (again) and keep winning and getting results,” he added.
Ironically, Pellegrino’s own form this season has somewhat mirrored the Victory’s. Last season’s Most Glorious Player struggled to assert himself on the contest during the early stages as he struggled to overcome a persistent heel injury and being marked more aggressively by opposition sides, well aware of his lethal crosses from the right.
But the 25-year-old South Australian has gradually built up his form and confidence over the past two months and proved brilliant in a central midfield role deputising for suspended skipper Jacob Burns when the Glory beat Adelaide 1-0 in the club’s last home match.
“I had that recurring heel problem for a few weeks and it was a bit difficult trying to work on that and play through that and travelling at the same time,” he said.
“But I pulled through that, and that’s been fine, touch wood, I’ve been injury free over the last couple of months.”
“(But) even though you might be happy with the personal performance, it’s still all about the team and working hard together as a group to maintain a good level of results.”
“It’s tough coming off two losses but we know we can perform well at home and with a home crowd coming out we should be raring to go and get a good result,” added Pellegrino.
Glory Girls Lose Suspended De Vanna
Perth Glory and Matilda’s striker Lisa De Vanna has been suspended for two W-League matches for an expletive-laden rant aimed at Perth Glory’s coaching staff and a match official.
De Vanna, who is on-loan at the W-League side from US woman’s professional league side Washington Freedom, was upset when Glory coach John Gibson decided to substitute her in the 31st minute of Perth’s 1-0 W-League win over Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium last Saturday.
It is understood the 24-year-old, who has scored 20 goals in 59 appearances for the Matildas, swore at the coaching staff and a fourth official as she stormed off the pitch before raising her middle finger towards a few members of the crowd.
Football Federation Australia found De Vanna guilty of offensive behaviour and intimidation of a match official, deeming she displayed “offensive, obscene, provocative or insulting gestures or language” as well as “intimidation of match officials, including derogatory or abusive words toward a match official”.
One match of De Vanna’s two-game ban will be suspended for a period of six months, meaning she will only miss Saturday’s away clash with Brisbane unless she re-offends before April 24.
Gibson said De Vanna’s actions were unacceptable but no further suspension would be handed down by the club.
“She was very remorseful about the incident and has apologised,” said Gibson.
“She’s carrying a bit of an ankle injury and she was frustrated with the way things were going in the game and she reacted unacceptably.
“It was totally unprofessional to the game and the fans.
“There’s no further suspension on top of the FFA penalty but we’ve put some guidelines down and she’s working with us.”
De Vanna’s absence is a major blow to the Glory, who have surged to third place on the eight-team table following two wins and a draw from the first four rounds.
Melbourne Victory Focus For Perth Glory Mile Sterjovski
October 28, 2009 by kirkoconnor
Glory star Mile Sterjovski is almost certain to take part in Perth’s crunch match against Melbourne at ME Bank Stadium, rating himself a 90 percent chance of returning to action on Sunday.
Sterjovski missed Glory’s past two games on the road with an ankle injury but has made steady progress in his recovery and trained solidly with team mates today.
Scans on the injury, sustained in Perth’s 1-0 win against Adelaide in round 10, cleared him of any significant damage but he hasn’t been able to test it fully until this week.
“It’s definitely better than it was last week,” Sterjovski said.
“I don’t know exactly what it was. It’s pretty bizarre. I thought I was going to be fine for the game against North Queensland (last Saturday) but after the final training session I pulled up a bit sore. We didn’t want to risk it and cause any further damage so that’s why I’ve rested it until now.
“The way I’m feeling I’d say I’m about a 90% chance of playing, I’ve got about four or five days to give it a good test so we’ll see how it goes. I’m pretty confident that it’s going to be ok,” said Sterjovski.
Sterjovski’s inclusion will be a big boost for Perth’s attack, the Socceroo hitting the back of the net three times this season himself, while also setting-up plenty more for strike partner Branko Jelic who scored a double in Perth’s round four win against the Victory.
Perth has an impressive record against Melbourne at ME Bank Stadium, claiming the scalp of the reigning champions in their previous four outings at the ground, however Sterjovski says the players won’t be banking on statistical advantages come Sunday.
“Melbourne is always going to be a difficult team to play. They’ve been pretty consistent since the competition started,” he said.
“We’re not expecting an easy game.
“Even though we have a pretty good record against them in Perth it will be tough but at the same time we’re confident we can get the result.”
Getting back to full fitness has taken on added importance for Sterjovski who revealed he missed an opportunity to join the Socceroos camp in Melbourne recently after sustaining the leg injury.
“Pim asked me to come into the camp on the Sunday, but unfortunately I was injured after the Adelaide game on the Friday night and couldn’t make it.
“That was the most disappointing thing for me because it might have given me a chance to play but the World Cup is still a long time away and I’ve got plenty of time to make it into the squad.
“The same thing happened to me last time (2006 World Cup) and I ended up making the team in the final selection so I’m not too worried at the moment. The most important thing is to keep playing regularly, play well and to win games.”

Sikora Sidelined for Glory
October 28, 2009 by kirkoconnor
Perth Glory midfielder Victor Sikora will miss the club’s next two matches after scans revealed a tear in his right hamstring.
Skiora was replaced just prior to half time of last Saturday’s game against North Queensland after feeling tightness in his leg but admitted the diagnosis came as a shock.
“It is a big surprise, I thought it was feeling tight only but the scans showed there were two tears, it really was a nasty surprise,” Sikora said.
“I have felt more tightness in games before and nothing has happened but unfortunately this time something was there.”
The former Dutch International has been in superb touch for Perth this season, adding plenty of bite to the club’s midfield while also having a presence in front of goal where he has scored four times.
While the injury requires a three week rehabilitation, Sikora should only miss two games due to a FIFA match break in mid November. He is expected to be ready to return in time for Perth’s blockbuster match against Sydney at ME Bank Stadium on November 22.
“The positive in all of this is that I should only miss a couple of games because of the break and be back in time for the game against Sydney at home,” Sikora said.
“It’s strange to think that I’ll miss any games at all because I’m walking fine and don’t feel much pain but I’ll get straight into the rehab and I can’t wait to get back out there.”
Late Glory Show Takes Points at AIS
A goal three minutes into stoppage-time from Perth Glory Youth midfielder Reece Vittiglia has given Gareth Naven’s side a thrilling 4-3 victory against the Australian Institute of Sport at McKellar Park in Canberra.
The game was played in great spirits in front of a healthy crowd and it saw both sides score two goals in two minutes at different stages, but after coming off a 4-0 loss last week, Glory’s hunger was too much for the AIS, the win moving the Glory into fourth spot on the table.
Both sides pressed early but both defences were on top, until the 16th minute when former striker with WA Premier League side Stirling Lions, Eli Babalj, struck from a tight angle to give the AIS the lead. His first shot was well saved by Alex Pearson and his follow up shot found the back of the net despite Glory defender Steve Hesketh’s effort’s on the goal line.
It got worse for the Glory two minutes later when Babalj headed home a cross from John Martinoski to give the AIS to a two goal lead.
It was all the AIS, who were looking for their first victory of the season, and on 26 minute they went close to a third, but Glory keeper Pearson was alert to save. Both sides midfield created numerous opportunities, with Nikola Stanojevic and Ersin Kaya for the AIS and Vittiglia and Cameron Edwards for Perth, the standouts.
The Glory pressed early in the second half looking to get back in the game and after a period of constant pressure they reduced the margin on 66 minutes when Cameron Edwards converted Perth’s third corner of the game, and two minutes later he set up another goal for Joshua Risdon, who levelled the score.
The home side were quick to hit back when John Matrinovski curled in a free kick from the edge of the box, just wide of Glory keeper Tim Doyle, in the 75th minute putting the AIS back in the lead and setting up an exciting finish.
With 11 minutes to go the Glory levelled, Ludovic Boi intercepting a bad back pass from Nikola Stanojevic, and finishing clinically.
Both sides pressed late for the winner and on 90 minutes Vittiglia fired straight at the keeper, and it looked like the points were to be shared but the Glory had other ideas.
In the third minute of stoppage-time a great ball from Glen Trifiro sent Vittiglia clear and he finished well to give the Glory the points. The final whistle blew seconds later and the Glory players were delighted with the win, their second against the AIS this season.
Glory skipper Steve Hesketh was delighted with the victory. “It was good performance from the side today and to come back from 2-0 down to win showed the side has great character,” said Hesketh.
“It was a case of deja vu today as we did the same against the AIS earlier in the season. It’s great to get Reece Vittiglia back today from injury and he popped up late with the winner so it made the flight home a little more enjoyable,” added Hesketh.
