Jukic Steps Up For Glory
Talented West Australian youngster Andrija Jukic will take the next step in his blossoming football career after signing a two year deal to play in the Hyundai A-League with Perth Glory.
The midfielder was part of Perth’s National Youth League set-up during the 2008/09 season where his outstanding performances earned him several opportunities with the senior squad.
Jukic, who captained the Youth side for the majority of the season, turned in some impressive displays including a hat trick against Sydney in round four and finished the season as the side’s leading scorer with six goals.
Glory Coach Dave Mitchell has kept a close eye on the 22 year old after seeing him in action first hand during Perth’s post-season tour of China last year.
“Andrija is a terrific young player and I have been impressed with the way he has continued to develop in the Youth Team set-up,” Mitchell said.
“Gareth Naven (Youth Team Coach) spoke very highly of Andrija and the effort he made throughout the season both on and off the pitch and that dedication has paid off.
“I’m confident he will be a solid contributor for Perth and make a big impression in the A-League next season,” Mitchell said.
Adept in front of goal and on the ball, Jukic can fill a variety of positions for Perth and is looking forward to the challenge of consistently performing at the highest level.
“I love playing football and have been working hard to get better and secure an A-League contract with the Glory and I now can’t wait for next season to begin,” Jukic said.
There won’t be any lack of support on the sidelines when Jukic lines up at Members Equity Stadium next season with his parents and five siblings, including sister Katarina who plays for Glory’s Westfield W-League side, ready to cheer him on.
“I come from a big football family and they have always been very encouraging and have supported me all the way and I’m sure they’ll be as excited as me when I get my chance next season,” Jukic said.

Saturday, February 28 - Litis Stadium
6:30 pm: Balcatta v Ashfield
8:30 pm: Fremantle Spirit v Wanneroo City
Sunday, March 1 - Alfred Skeet Oval
6:00 pm: South West Phoenix v Bayswater City
8:00 pm: Morley Windmills v Forrestfield United
Sunday, March 1: - BGC Stadium
6 pm: Gosnells City v Rockingham City
8 pm: Dianella WE v Queens Park
Predictions
Balcatta 2 v 1 Ashfield. The Cats have been the big dissapointment of this group and will be looking for a win to finish on a higher note. Ashfield’s new coach, John Castrelli, will also be looking for some positive signs as his charges have also failed to register a single point. Balcatta to edge it.
Fremantle Spirit 2 v 1 Wanneroo City. The match of the round for Division 1. Both teams are locked on 7 points with Fremantle having the better goal difference. The Roos will have to go for the win and this might open them up to a Fremantle side that likes scoring a goal or two. Fremantle to go through in a very close encounter.
South West Phoenix 2 v 2 Bayswater City. With Morley taking on Forrestfield in the late kickoff Bayswater will have to win this one to stand any chance of qualification. The Phoenix are in a similar situation as goal difference suggest they have little chance of overhauling Forrestfield even if Forrie lose to Windmills. A draw may not be enough for either side.
Morley Windmills 2 v 1 Forrestfield United. For God sake Tom, stop farting around and play your best eleven. Windmills to cause an upset and win a place in the semi-finals. Forrie to win the group anyway.
Gosnells City 0 v 2 Rockingham City. Can anyone stop the Rock ? Not Gosnells anyway. Rockingham win the group.
Dianella WE 3 v 1 Queens Park. Dianella improving every week and will be too strong for Queens Park.

Friday, February 27 - BGC Stadium
6:30 pm: Swan United v Western Knights
8:30 pm: Perth SC v Sorrento
Saturday, February 28 – Alfred Skeet Oval
6:30 pm: Canning City v Mandurah City
8:30 pm: Cockburn City v Armadale
Sunday, March 1: - Litis Stadium
6 pm: Floreat Athena v Inglewood United
8 pm: ECU Joondalup v Stirling Lions
Predictions
Swan United 1 v 3 Western Knights. The Knights have already qualified for the semi finals and may be tempted to give a run to a few fringe players. Second place in the group may mean an unwanted semi-final against Floreat though so count on the Knights to continue on their winning ways.
Sorrento 1 v 2 Perth SC. Once again Sorrento feature in the match of the round, this time against Perth SC. With both teams level on points and only one of them able to qualify for the semis only a win will be good enough for Perth due to their inferior goal difference. Expect this one to be very close with contrasting styles. Perth to edge it due to home ground advantage.
Canning City 1 v 2 Mandurah City. By all accounts Mandurah have not had too impressive a Night Series, however, as we witnessed last season, that is no reason to right them off just yet. Canning have run hot and cold and would need all the results to go their way to qualify for the semi finals. Mandurah to edge a very tight encounter.
Cockburn City 1 v 1 Armadale. Armadale also have an outside chance of clinching a semi-final berth, however, like Canning City, it seems an unlikely outcome. Cockburn defeated Canning last week and will be looking to build on that result coming up to the league season. A draw seems likely.
Floreat Athena 2 v 1 Inglewood United. A loss here for either team would likely see them eliminated whilst a draw would suit Floreat but maybe not Inglewood. By the time this kicks off both teams will be aware of what is required to qualify as they will have the benefit of knowing the results of the other games in the group in advance. Floreat should continue their good form and win the group.
ECU Joondalup 2 v 3 Stirling Lions. Both sides look a bit suspect at the back, however, Joondalup’s new keeper Dafydd Jones, certainly strengthened their back four last weekend. A high scoring game which Stirling should just edge.
Angels Night Series Results

The night series started brightly for the Angels when they kicked off their first game against UWA in the premier division. Supporters looked forward to a good game on this cool evening.
Angels took the lead early in the first half through a well poached goal from Annick Phan. As the Angels settled down, they played good strong attractive football and took hold of the game in midfield.
The second goal was scored shortly before half time from a thunderous drive by Claire Wragg who has the confidence to shoot from long range. UWA tried to make a game of it by using the long ball to their speedy striker who got the first goal with a neat chip over keeper Kristy Tershinsky.
After the break the Angels, who were making wise substitutions took control and went after the third goal which came from the boot of Collen Van Dongen. .
Uwa never looked like threathening the Angels as they hardly got into the attacking zone and they looked a different team to the one that played so well in the 2008 season. However they did get a second goal which was well deserved as they stayed focussed and produced their best on the night.
At the closing minutes of the game, the Angels kept pressing forward and got a deserved fourth goal which was again scored by Colleen van Dongen which will boost her confidence.
Coach Leo Coppens was very happy at the outcome and will no doubt get the team back on track for next weeks game against Northern Redbacks on Fri 27th at 20.30.
Result Sunday 22nd Feb Coker Park : Beckenham Angels 4 v 2 UWA

Mandurah City Ladies Unlucky In First Night Series Match

Mandurah City Premier Ladies were a touch unlucky to lose their first night series game 1-0 to an efficient and well organised Subiaco team.
A shaky first ten minutes of the game saw Mandurah concede a goal through some poor defending. However, from then on Mandurah consolidated and gradually started to dominate proceedings. Kerrie Brooker leading the charge in the first half, with some darting runs which caused Subiaco all sorts of problems.
The second half was a fairly even contest, with Caris Rhodes competing fiercely in midfield to help provide opportunities to go into attacking situations. With ten minutes to go, one of Mandurah’s many debutants, Opal Wright, had a golden opportunity to grab the equalizer, but shot wildly over the bar from 4 metres out. The Ladies Coach, Alistair Rhodes, took many positives from the game and will look to capitalise on these over the coming weeks.
The ladies next game is scheduled for this Sunday 1st March, 8.00 pm kick off at Coker Park against a strong Queens Park outfit. Rhodes will be looking for more cohesion if the ladies are to seriously challenge.
ECU Joondalup Notch First Night Series Win

A depleted ECU Joondalup side lodged their first Night Series win this weekend with a 2-0 defeat of fellow strugglers, Swan United.
Joondalup were without regular strikers Ian McMurray and Tommy Amphlett as well as coach, Syd Amphlett, who were on their way to Scotland to attend McMurray’s wedding.
Prior to the game there was a minutes silence which, we presume, was for local football legend, Reg Davies, who passed away earlier in the week.
ECU started the game the stronger of the two sides and they went ahead on 10 minutes as they benefitted from an unnecessary handball as Swan defended a corner.
Striker Adam Pigrum stepped forward to take the kick and he sent it straight down the middle. Pigrum was very fortunate as the ball just managed to squirm through the legs of the Swan keeper.
Jake Benson-Cooper could have extended Joondalup’s lead, however, his header was well saved by the Swan keeper at the far post on 27 minutes.
ECU midfielder John Higgins should have put Joondalup further ahead on two occasions within minutes of each other late in the first half as he created then spurned two great chances.
Scott Bushby was the next to threaten for Joondalup straight after the restart, however, Joondalup were once again unable to extend their lead.
Swan had battled to create any real chances up to this point and it was John Mansaray who had their first real chance on 47 minutes as his header sailed just over the Joondalup crossbar.
Swan were taking advantage of the strengthening breeze in their favour and were having their best period the game so far. ECU had conceded a number of free kicks on both flanks and Swan were using their aerial advantage to put the Joondalup goal under some pressure.
On 52 minutes Swan had the perfect chance to level the match as they were awarded what appeared to be a very soft penalty. Damian Scali stepped up to take the kick and it cannoned off the top of the Joondalup crossbar and away to safety.
Scali had another chance to equalise on 84 minutes, however, his headed effort went just wide of the ECU upright. It was Scali again on 85 minutes who threatened as his powerful shot went just over the Joondalup crossbar.
Joondalup secured the points on 90 minutes as John Higgins got his head to a Swan clearance and directed the ball wide. The resultant cross found substitute Craig Cheesman at back post and Cheesman made no mistake with a well placed tap in from a few yards out.
In fact Cheesman could have had a second in time added on as he was fed by man of the match, Scott Bushby, however, the Swan keeper managed to puch Cheesman effort around the post.
Perth Edge Lions In Night Series Thriller

Night Series specialists Perth SC set up a thrilling final round encounter with Sorrento next week after they edged Stirling Lions 3-2 on Sunday evening’s late fixture.
The Lions were playing for survival in the competition as a loss was sufficient to ensure they would not reach the semi-final stage whilst Perth were looking to overhaul Sorrento to give them the advantage in next week’s do or die encounter in Round 5.

The game started at a frenetic pace with both sides committed to attack. Perth were without livewire striker David Onoforo who had missed training during the week due to taking a short holiday and had drafted in South African, Genaveo Human, as his replacement.
Stirling took the lead on 13 minutes against the run of play as midfielder Jordy Rhodes’ speculative effort from distance found the bottom corner of the net much to the surprise of Perth keeper Gareth Deegs.
The Lions lead was short-lived, however, as Perth equalised within a minute of the restart. Perth managed to get around the back of the Lions defence wide on the left and Naglieri was on hand to tap in the resultant cross from close range for a 1-1 scoreline.
Stirling continued to cause Perth problems from the middle of the park with Rhodes unleashing two more thunderbolts within the next five minutes.
On 25 minutes Perth took the lead as South African import, Genaveo Human, stole away from the Lions defence to place the ball wide of the keeper to take the score to 2-1. The Lions believed there was a hint of offside, however, the referee’s assistant kept his flag down.
Stirling’s Alan Muir evened the ledger on 38 minutes as his stunning freekick from all of 30 metres powered past Deegs. Half time score 2-2.
Play after the break was quite even with both sides creating chances as they slugged it out for the required result.
Perth coach Graham Normanton then made a substitution that changed the game as he brought on David Onoforo on 63 minutes.
Within a minute of coming on Onoforo found space in the Lions penalty area to place the ball past the Lions keeper to allow Perth to edge ahead for the second time in the match.
Perth striker Phil Arnold, facing his old club for the first time could have sealed the points as he broke away on 67 minutes, however, the Lions keeper was quick off his line to save the danger.
On 71 minutes Perth were awarded a penalty as Greg Sharland was felled by the Lions keeper. Arnold took the kick against his old club failing to beat the keeper with the rebound falling for Howarth following up. Howarth’s hurried shot sailed wide of the Lions upright.
Onoforo had the final say for the match as his bullet like header cannoned off the crossbar late on to ensure the score stayed at 3-2 to Perth.
Perth may come to rue their missed chances on the night as another goal would have lifted them above Sorrento on the table and needing only a draw in their Round 5 clash to progress. As it stands now though, Sorrento lead Perth on the table by benefit of one goal on goal difference and a draw will now see Sorrento progress.
