Last Minute Heartbreak for Glory v Mariners

November 29, 2008 by Kirk

Perth Glory were less than 1 minute away from a well deserved victory at home against the Central Coast Mariners today before substitute Sasho Petrovski scored a last gasp equaliser to give the Mariners a share of the points in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Jamie Harnwell was back at the heart of the defence for the Glory with Nikolai Topor-Stanley whilst Eugene Dadi was upfront with Nikita Rukavytsya.

Central Coast Mariners needed a win to get back into the top four after the Phoenix’s surprise win against the Victory last night whilst Glory were looking to get the three points to keep in touch with the mid table clubs.

The Glory started the game much the better of the two sides, however, despite lots of possession lacked any real penetration in the early exchanges.

Midway through the half Central Coast Mariners started to come back into the game as they exploited the weakness on Perth’s left side with Adrian Trinidad and Dino Djulbic both playing out of position at left midfield and left fullback respectively.

Adrian Caceras had the first chance for the Mariners as he found space around the Perth penalty spot dragging his shot wide of the target. Within a minute Caceras found space in a similar position with his effort this time coming off the upright.

On 27 minutes the Mariners took the lead through a freekick from the edge of the box. Jamie Harnwell had conceded the foul as he handled a ball that bounced above his head.

Mariner’s free kick specialist Mile Jedinak struck the ball around the wall and wide of the Glory keeper Tando Velaphi who will feel that he should have done better.

The Mariners took that lead to the half time break. Perth’s first half performance was average although in defence of the home side they had worked hard without much reward.

Coach David Mitchell’s team talk must have been a screamer as the Glory emerged from the break a much improved side.

It was the Mariners though who were first to threaten after the interval as on 48 minutes they might have extended their lead as a fortuitous deflection off Dylan Macallister looped onto the Glory’s crossbar.

Glory got their just reward for their additional effort on 54 minutes as Adrian Trinidad deflected a Mariners pass into the path of Nikita Rukavytsya. Rukavytsya’s pace was far too much for the square Mariners defence as he went on to place the ball wide of Vukovic in the Mariner’s goal for a 1-1 scoreline.

On 62 minutes Glory went ahead through one of the goals of the season. Crisp interpassing between Rukavytsya, Dadi and Trinidad resulted in Rukavytsya gaining another clear view of goal and, once again, the youngster made no mistake placing the ball wide of Vukovic.

On 68 minutes a superb piece of play from Trinidad wide on the left resulted in a shot that cannoned off the Mariners upright and across the goalmouth and wide.

On 71 minutes Rukavytsya should have completed his hat trick however he was thwarted on the goal line by a brave desperation save from Vukovic.

Mariners defender Nigel Boogaard was shown a straight red card on 89 minutes for a crude tackle from behind leaving the visitors to finish the game with 10 men.

That should have been the end of proceedings with the Glory closing out the game, however, on 92 minutes the Glory were made to pay for their inexperience as Sasha Petrovski who had only come on as a substitute on 81 minutes latched onto a wayward strike from Dylan Macallister to slide the ball wide of Velaphi for an undeserved equaliser.

No doubt Glory are improving week in and week out under Mitchell and will definitely continue to do so as the season progresses, however, hope of a top four spot must now be fading fast.

Long term injury layoffs to experienced campaigners Haydyn Foxe and Amaral have hurt the side a lot this season and that will likely be the reason Glory fail once again to secure an ALeague playoff position come the new year.

Wleague: Jets Too Good for Glory

November 24, 2008 by football_west

The finals hopes of the Perth Glory Women’s team took another body blow after a 1-4 loss to the Newcastle Jets at Wanderers Stadium on Saturday.

In a sign of just how tight the league is, the Jets jumped from seventh to third after their victory, however that fact won’t be any consolation to the Glory, who are still trailing the rest of the league in eighth position.

It was the perfect start to the match for the Glory who took the lead after only six minutes on the clock when Marianna Tabain got her side on the board.

The dream start soon turned sour for the Glory however when Kirstyn Pearce equalised on 17 minutes and then in a devastating ten minute spell, the Jets scored twice more with strikes to Katie Gill and Nicole Jones, to make the score 1-3 at the break.

Amber Nielson made it four for the Jets 14 minutes before half time to wrap up the three points.

Full match details not available at time of release.

Here at club-footballwa we are keen to promote all aspects of the local game not just Perth Glory or Saturday State League football.

We hope you will see this site as your site as much as it is ours as we are encouraging the football community in WA to contribute to the site either by way of comments, match reports articles, pictures, audio, videos…… in fact you can contribute absolutely anything that you think will be of interest to other visitors to the site whether they are from your club or a member of the wider football community.

And, for all local football clubs out there, we offer your club a free website linked to club-footballwa.com that you can manage and control (without having to understand any of that technical stuff).

Please do not hesitate to contact us as well if you have any ideas for articles or feel there is any area that you believe we should report on. We will consider all suggestions, however, please be aware that we are all about promoting the game here in WA rather than trying to bring anyone or any organisation down.

The core team here at club-footballwa is small and growing, however, we already boast some of WA’s long term football tragics with Peter Simcox (simmo) reporting on Saturday football and adding his expert comments on all aspects of the game, Steve ‘Syd’ Amphlett (the potter) giving us all the benefit of his many years experience and myself, Kirk O’Connor (the wanderer) maintaining the site and adding my own tuppence worth from time to time.

If you want to become a regular contributor of content or articles about any part of our game in WA we would welcome your enquiry. Just drop us a line and we’ll give you a call to discuss.

WA Girls Star In Young Matilda’s Success

November 17, 2008 by football_west

Three Western Australian girls have played starring roles for the Westfield Young Matildas in their successful participation in the recent AFC u19 Women’s Championship Qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur.

Perth Glory Women’s players Ella Mastrantonio, 16 from Beaconsfield, Marianna Tabain, 16 from Coogee and Samantha Kerr, 15 from Kardinya were key components in the team coached by Alen Stajcic. All three netted important goals throughout the campaign, with Kerr scoring three times and Tabain and Mastrantonio on the scoreboard once each.

The Young Matildas finished second in their five team group winning three games, including an 18-0 thrashing of India, whilst only losing the one match to Thailand, ensuring progression to the tournament proper in 2009.

Mastrantonio and Tabain will now concentrate their efforts on the Perth Glory Women’s side and moving the team away from the bottom of the table starting with a crunch match this Saturday against Adelaide United at Members Equity Stadium.

Kerr, sister of star West Coast Eagle Daniel, has remained in Kuala Lumpur to play for the Australian u16 side which is also bidding to qualify for the AFC Women’s Championships in 2009. The u16 qualifying tournament runs from November 8-17.

Three Points Just The Tonic for Glory

November 17, 2008 by football_west

The Perth Glory Women have recorded their first ever win in the Westfield W-League, with an emphatic 3-2 victory over Adelaide United at Members Equity Stadium.

In truth, the score line flattered the visitors whose goals came in the 90th and 93rd minutes to dampen what was a festival atmosphere amongst fans and players.

The damage was done in a dominating first half for Perth, Collette McCallum curling in a sensational 22 yard left footer over the keeper and in off the crossbar before Lisa De Vanna gave the crowd what they were after, with a searing run from halfway leaving her with the task of finishing clinically past Emma Wirkus four minutes before half time.

After weathering the inevitable Adelaide fightback at the start of the second half, Perth continued to dictate the play and a disastrous own goal by captain Dianne Alagich added insult to injury in the 56th minute.

In the dying stages, Sharon Black caught Glory ‘keeper Maya Diederichsen off guard with a 35-yard free-kick which sailed into the top right corner of the net.

Her screamer lifted the visitors, who scrambled home a late consolation goal thanks to Victoria Balamenos with the last kick of the match.

It was a stunning return to form for Perth, who enjoyed the return of a pair of Young Matildas in Marianna Tabain and Ella Mastrantonio.

Coach Nicola Williams praised the efforts of her two junior internationals after the match.

“Ella and Marianna were sensational,” she said. “They’re very skillful and talented players and they allow us to play a lot more attacking football and hold the ball.”

“We say they’re our young players, but they’re the most vital ones to us.”

Williams was also impressed with De Vanna, her dynamic striker who scored and had a big impact after just one week training with the squad.

“She was wanting to win the ball (and) had plenty of aggression,” Williams said. “Before the game she was focused and rested up from last week. She’s had a lot of travel in the last few weeks (but) she had a big impact today.”

Returning Players to Bolster Glory

November 15, 2008 by football_west

Perth Glory Women’s coach Nicola Williams will be able to call upon almost all of her heavy artillery this weekend as the team bids for its first W-League points of the campaign in this crucial round 4 match against Adelaide United.

Star signing and Matildas player Lisa De Vanna has had a week of training under her belt with her new team mates and will be much better for the run out. Glory supporters hope the livewire attacker will be the team’s answer to the lack of goals, with only a solitary Shannon May strike coming in the first three matches.

Bolstering the midfield to add assistance to Collette McCallum will be returning Young Matildas Marianna Tabain and Ella Mastrantonio who have missed the previous two matches due to participation in the AFC u19 Women’s Championship Qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur. The young starlets will add much needed creative flair and skill to a midfield which will be looking to provide quality service to the forwards.

Maya Diederichsen will get the opportunity to assert herself as the new number one ‘keeper after previous custodian Kate Stewart was cruelly ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered in training last week.

With a log jam of teams on six competition points, a victory for the Glory will close the gap on their rivals and put the team in the hunt for a finals berth as the competition nears the halfway mark of its inaugural season.
